Thoughts on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and today I was thinking about it more than I have in the past.  When I was single, I really disliked this “holiday”.  Part of it was jealousy, wishing I was in a great relationship, being pampered with gifts and showered with affections.  The other part was how ridiculous the “holiday” is.  People put some much into the gifts, measuring their relationships on what they did and didn’t receive, or how the day was, and Hallmark and flower shops definitely take advantage by jacking up the prices on everything, and forget about trying to go out to eat, unless you enjoy waiting for hours (if you or your significant other forgot to make reservations weeks in advance).  The last couple of years, though, I have enjoyed this holiday.  Not necessarily for the day itself, though my hubby has made each one very special, but really for what it represents at its core, and that is love.  I don’t think that we should contain our displays of affection and love to just one recognized holiday.  I think that is why this holiday bugs me so much.  You should really take time throughout the year, month, week, and really each day, to show your partner how you feel about them.  It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture, with lots of gifts and flowers and fru fru, though those are nice in moderation.  So why not try making Valentine’s Day several days this month.  What are some ways you can show your partner you love them?  What are your plans for Valentine’s Day?  Do you celebrate this holiday?
